Jeb Bush: Hur katolicismen förändrade mitt liv

Jeb Bush är katolik, men i motsats till te x Marco Rubio har han i grunden inget eget katolskt påbrå utan konverterade till katolicismen som ung, när han träffade sin hustru Columba.

Idag har påven anlänt till USA, och Jeb Bush skriver idag en artikel i CNN om sin katolska tro och hur den förändrade hans liv. Han inleder:

In our Holy Father, we have a model of personal holiness and deep concern for the most vulnerable among us. He reminds us to speak out for the persecuted, advocate for the unborn, comfort the afflicted and welcome the stranger.

Han fortsätter sedan med att konstatera att påven står över politik och inte kan användas som politiskt slagträ:

The pundits would like to make him out to be a politician, but his charge is much greater than that: He is the spiritual leader to the largest group of Christians on Earth and an inspiration to all people of good will.

Vidare konstaterar Bush att han hoppas att påvens besök kommer att påminna nationen om att respektera både religionsfrihet och människor med andra ståndpunkter än ens egna.

Vidare berättar han om sin egen resa in i katolicismen; hur han besökte mässor redan i sin ungdom, sedan gifte sig med sin katolska hustru och sedan dess har gett sina barn en katolsk uppfostran.

Det var dock först för 20 år sedan han personligen tog själva steget och konverterade. Efter att han förlorade sin kampanj till guvernör i Florida 1994 gick han grundutbildningen Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Tron växte till och blev alltmer levande för honom:

I gained a deeper appreciation for the sacraments of the church and the grace they impart. I studied Catholic Church doctrine, and how it is renewed in every age. The more I learned, the more I appreciated the rich history of the church and its teachings, and my heart was changed by God's hand.

Han beskriver vidare hur han fick förmånen att leda USA:s delegation vid installeringen av Benedictus XVI 2005:

At the request of my brother, President George W. Bush, I was just as blessed to lead the U.S. delegation to Pope Benedict XVI's inaugural Mass back in 2005. It was truly an honor and inspiration to meet such a devout and thoughtful spiritual leader.

Vidare konstaterar han att den katolska tron kommer att kunna ses i de skaror som i dagarna kommer att välkomna påve Franciskus, men än mer i alla de som hela tiden arbetar med att hjälpa de behövande. Han skriver också:

I have witnessed the power of God, through his church, to touch lives and transform the world -- both on the world stage and in my own heart.
