Chuck Colson avliden

Charles "Chuck" Colson är för de flesta känd som Nixons rådgivare, som blev en av dem som fälldes för brott relaterade till Watergate-skandalen, men som i fängelset blev kristen och därefter satsade en stor del av sitt liv på att hjälpa fångar att återrehabiliteras till samhället och startade organisationen Prison Fellowship i detta syfte - en organisation som också inspirerade George W. Bushs Faith Based-Initiative-politik. Här har MSNBC ett inslag om Colsons liv och bortgång:

Colsons berättelse finns även utgiven på svenska av det kristna bokförlaget Interskrift 1976 i boken "Nytt ljus" - när svenska frikyrkor intresserade sig för USA:s evangelikala (Jimmy Carter, Chuck Colson etc - tills USA:s evangelikala i svenska ögon gick alldeles för långt till höger, i samband med Reagan).

Bushs huvudtalskrivare - och en av mina egna ideologiska inspiratörer - Michael Gerson en artikel om Chuck Colson, som han kände, och hur media fokuserat på de negativa bitarna för 30 år sedan men i mycket mindre utsträckning uppmärksammat det oerhörda arbete Chuck Colson sedan dess faktiskt gjort. Colsons organisation Prison Fellow är världen största hjälporganisation för fångar och deras familjer och är verksamt i hundra länder och Colsons arbete blev en förlängning på hans egen omvändelse. Gerson skriver:

Prison often figures large in conversion stories. Pride is the enemy of grace, and prison is the enemy of pride. “How else but through a broken heart,” wrote Oscar Wilde after leaving Reading Gaol, “may Lord Christ enter in?” It is the central paradox of Christianity that fulfillment starts in emptiness, that streams emerge in the desert, that freedom can be found in a prison cell. Chuck’s swift journey from the White House to a penitentiary ended a life of accomplishment — only to begin a life of significance.

...Prison Fellowship, is the largest compassionate outreach to prisoners and their families in the world, with activities in more than 100 countries. ...If everyone matters and counts, then criminals do as well. Chuck led a movement of volunteers attempting to love some of their least lovable neighbors. This inversion of social priorities — putting the last first — is the best evidence of a faith that is more than crutch, opiate or self-help program. It is the hallmark of authentic religion — and it is the vast, humane contribution of Chuck Colson.
