“I never thought Obama would come to a school in Miami-Dade because people have said our school is bad,’’ said Toree Boyd, a junior who was sitting with his football teammates. “But we did go up a school grade and now we get to see Obama for the first time.’’
Obama tillkännagav också skolans framgångar:
“It’s inspiring to think about where you were a few years ago and where you are today,” Obama told the teenagers. “You came together to turn this school around, and I think the rest of us can learn from that.”
På plats fanns också Floridas tidigare guvernör Jeb Bush - som också låg bakom Obamas inbjudan till skolan - för vilken utbildning fortfarande är ett ämne som ligger honom varmt om hjärtat. Bush förklarade att utbildningsfrågan var en bipartisansk sådan:
“Education is not a Republican issue or a Democrat issue,” he said. “It’s an issue of national priority.”
Obama skojade också om Jeb och sa:
"Aside from being a former governor of this great state, Jeb of course is best known as being the brother of Marvin Bush," ett skämt som väckte många skratt.
Utbildningsfrågan är förmodligen också ett av de områden där samarbete lättast kan uppstå och redan har gjort det. Lärarfacken var dock skeptiska till Bushs närvaro (trots att Obama grundläggande förespråkar samma principer gällande utbildning som såväl George W. - som Jeb Bush).
“We always welcome the president, but we cannot support the Jeb Bush education agenda,” sa United Teachers of Dade President Karen Aronowitz. “That agenda relies strictly on the testing of students and eliminates funding for important parts of our curriculum like the arts, physical education and gifted classes.”
