Det Republikanska partiet vänder sig nu mot sin president häftigare än tidigare, för hans stöd till bilindustrin på 17,4 miljarder dollar (13,4 miljarder + 4 tillkommande miljarder).
Den Republikanske senatorn Jon Kyl från Arizona sa:
“I’m very disappointed, the president justified his action with a false choice: it’s either this plan or abrupt liquidation of the companies. The White House seems to think that the industry didn’t have time to deal with the problem or prepare for an orderly bankruptcy, which is false.”
Även Arizonas senator John McCain vänder sig mot bailouten och säger:
"I regret the president’s decision to give away over $17 billion to the domestic automakers. Just last week, the Senate rejected a bailout plan because it failed to provide assurances that the domestic manufacturers would fundamentally change the way they do business to ensure their long-term viability. I find it unacceptable that we would leave the American taxpayer with a tab of tens of billions of dollars while failing to receive any serious concessions from the industry."
En som däremot ansåg att beslutet var bra, var killen från motståndarpartiet - ni minns han som just vann ett presidentval på att dagligen förklara hur dålig han tyckte president Bush var - Barack Obama, som sa som följande:
"Today's actions are a necessary step to help avoid a collapse in our auto industry that would have devastating consequences for our economy and our workers. With the short-term assistance provided by this package, the auto companies must bring all their stakeholders together — including labor, dealers, creditors and suppliers — to make the hard choices necessary to achieve long-term viability. The auto companies must not squander this chance to reform bad management practices and begin the long-term restructuring that is absolutely required to save this critical industry and the millions of American jobs that depend on it,"
Här i Sverige välkomnades Bushs hjälp av både Saab och Volvo. DN citerar Erik Geers från Saab:
- Det här betyder att omstruktureringen i USA är i full sving, säger Erik Geers, informationsdirektör vid Saab Automobile, helägt av amerikanska biljätten General Motors (GM).
- Vi visste att Bushadministrationen var klart för ett hjälppaket. Och tydligen är även den kommande Obamaadministrationen det, säger Erik Geers till DN.se.
President Bush och blivande President Obama tycks stå nära varandra i frågan - däremot går en knivskarp ideologisk gräns mellan partierna, som tycks stå längre ifrån varandra än på väldigt länge - något som tidigare märkts tydligt i Kalifornien, men nu verkar gestalta sig lika tydligt i den federala Kongressen.
