Obama lovar stänga GITMO men tonar ner kampanjretoriken

I en intervju på ABC News säger Obama att Guantanamo förmodligen inte kommer att stängas inom de första 100 dagarna av hans presidentskap - däremot ska ingen tvivla på att han tänker stänga Guantanamo, som i omvärldens ögon blivit en symbol för övergrepp mot mänskliga rättigheter. I en intervju på ABC News säger Obama:

"It is more difficult than I think a lot of people realize. Part of the challenge that you have is that you have a bunch of folks that have been detained, many of whom may be very dangerous who have not been put on trial or have not gone through some adjudication. And some of the evidence against them may be tainted even though it's true. And so how to balance creating a process that adheres to rule of law, habeas corpus, basic principles of Anglo-American legal system, by doing it in a way that doesn't result in releasing people who are intent on blowing us up."

Obamas ord är förstås ingen större nyhet för dem som följt turerna kring fångbasen utanför Kuba. Det intressanta är dock att Obamas ganska hätska kampanjretorik nu tycks vara lagd åt sidan. Efter att han vann valet den fjärde november förra året, manade American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Obama att stänga GITMO redan första dagen som president. Låt mig citera en ACLU bloggare som den 10 november 2008 skrev följande:

"Our top issue — closing down Gitmo and shutting down the military commissions — can be done as soon as he lifts his left hand, picks up the new presidential pen and signs an executive order closing Gitmo and ending the military commissions once and for all. Call me naive, but I honestly believe he wants to do it. He promised us that on the campaign trail, and I believe it was more than an empty promise... With a stroke of his pen on Day One, a good, courageous president can do that — as long as he listens to himself and to our pleas. As long as he doesn’t listen to the centrist and DLC types who tell him, "It’s too complicated." "It’s tougher than it looks." "Take your time."


Häromdagen gav vice-president Dick Cheney -som smått kommit att betraktas som den största höken i hela Bushadministrationen, och som även (till skillnad från Bush) inte alls önskar se GITMO nedstängt - Obama ett råd, och sa så här:

"Before you start to implement your campaign rhetoric you need to sit down and find out precisely what it is we did and how we did it. Because it is going to be vital to keeping the nation safe and secure in the years ahead and it would be a tragedy if they threw over those policies simply because they've campaigned against them."

När Obama ombads kommentera Cheneys uttalande sa Obama:

"I think that was pretty good advice. I should know what's going on before we make judgments and that we shouldn't be making judgments on the basis of incomplete information or campaign rhetoric."

Med det svaret och den modifierade synen på GITMO tyder det mesta på att Obama lyssnat till just de röster som ACLU inte ville att han skulle lyssna till. Något som måste sägas vara en mycket sund och rationell inställning av den blivande presidenten. Däremot visar det också att han i efterhand verkar ta lätt på de punkter på vilka han så dogmatiskt kampanjade mot en John McCain som redan då hade ungefär samma syn på saker och ting som Obama har nu.
