Bush förklarar att de program han drev igenom, såväl Patriot Act som telefonavlyssning av misstänkta terrorister var nödvändiga för att förhindra nya attacker. Han förklarar också att den information som ledde fram till dödadent av Usama Bin Ladin började samlas redan under hans presidentskap - direkt efter 9/11:
"The work that was done by intelligence communities during my presidency was part of putting together the puzzle that enabled us to see the full picture of how bin Laden was communicating and eventually where he was hiding," he said. "It began the day after 9/11."
Bush säger i intervjun också att han är oroad över att USA håller på bli "isolationistisk" och på väg mot den punkt när man säger att man inte längre bryr sig om unga demokratiers överlevnad världen över:
"Democracies, when they take hold, yield peace," Bush said. The Middle East "is the part of the world that needs peace, and we'll be successful — unless, of course, we quit," he said. "My concern is that isolationist tendencies … cause America to retreat from the world."
Bush berättar också vad han lärde sig om sig själv vid 9/11-attacken:
"The job of the president was to say here are the facts, here's what we're dealing with, and deal with them. Not to feel sorry for yourself, or not to say why did it happen under my watch? That's not a leadership trait that is admirable. … I felt like I had the capacity to deal with the crisis, and you don't know until it happens. When I look back on it, I don't feel a sense of being overwhelmed."
