Kvällens event kallas för "The Response" och anordnas och betalas för av ett antal evangelikala- och socialkonservativa grupper. Och guvernör Perry skrev bland annat följande e-post-inbjudan:
Fellow Americans,
Right now, America is in crisis: we have been besieged by financial debt, terrorism, and a multitude of natural disasters. As a nation, we must come together and call upon Jesus to guide us through unprecedented struggles, and thank Him for the blessings of freedom we so richly enjoy.
Some problems are beyond our power to solve, and according to the Book of Joel, Chapter 2, this historic hour demands a historic response. Therefore, on August 6, thousands will gather to pray for a historic breakthrough for our country and a renewed sense of moral purpose.
I sincerely hope you’ll join me in Houston on August 6th and take your place in Reliant Stadium with praying people asking God’s forgiveness, wisdom and provision for our state and nation. There is hope for America. It lies in heaven, and we will find it on our knees.

Eventet har dock blivit föremål för många diskussioner - i synnerhet efter att det kommit att stå allt tydligare att Perry förmodligen kommer att ställa upp i presidentvalet, och där också tycks ha relativt goda möjligheter att faktiskt kanske kunna vinna nomineringen.
Eventet har kritiserats för att vara exklusivt kristet, och från andra för att "religion och stat" inte hålls separerade. Hemsidan har en trosbekännelse som konstaterar:

Fox News har här en diskussion om eventets tydligt kristna prägel, samt hur det hela bör betraktas i fråga om separation mellan kyrka och stat:
Huruvida eventet kommer att lyckas eller ej återstår också att se. Dels pg a att bara omkring 8 000 för närvarande tackat ja till att delta - i en arena som rymmer upp emot 70 000. Av de många politiker Perry inbjudit är det också bara Kansas guvernör Sam Brownback som tackat ja.

En av dem som står bakom eventet är, som nämndes i inslaget, pastorn John Hagee. Denne var en gång John McCains pastor, men McCain tog avstånd från denne 2008 efter att det uppdagats att Hagee predikat anti-katolicism och spridit protestantiska myter om att katolska kyrkan skulle vara "horan från Babylon". Hagee tog så småningom också själv avstånd från sina uttalanden och förklarade att han gått på anti-katolska konspirationsteorier. Han togs också i försvar av den judiske senatorn Joe Lieberman, som konstaterade att Hagees stöd till Israel vägde tyngre än dennes uttalanden.
Inför kvällens event återstår dock att se vilka predikanter som kommer att synas mest, samt även vilken specifik roll Rick Perry själv kommer att ha. Vad händelsen visar är dock att de republikanska presidentkandidaterna driver en kamp för de evangelikala primärvalsrösterna - genom att, såvida de inte är mormoner likt Huntsman och Romney, flasha så mycket de kan med sin tro - och mer specifikt, med sin evangelikala eller katolska kristendom.
