President Obama ska för att få köl på den sviktande sjukvårdsreformdebatten, som de senaste veckorna främst resulterat i skrikande konfrontationer mellan publik och politiker från båda sidor - idag hålla ett eget town-hall-meeting. Risken finns att han själv kommer att drabbas av protester - men han tar avstånd från Demokratiska ledare som Nancy Pelosi som sagt att protesterna är "oamerikanska". I en artikel i USA Today i måndags skrev Nancy Pelosi tillsammans med Demokraternas majoritetsledare i Representanthuset Steny Hoyer följande:
"ugly campaign is underway not merely to misrepresent the health insurance reform legislation, but to disrupt public meetings and prevent members of Congress and constituents from conducting a civil dialogue."
“Drowning out opposing views is simply un-American. Drowning out the facts is how we failed at this task for decades,"
Obamas vice-pressekreterare Bill Burton försökte dock förklara Obamas position och sa:
"I think there's actually a pretty long tradition of people shouting at politicians in America. The President thinks that if people want to come and have a spirited debate about health care, a real vigorous conversation about it, that's a part of the American tradition and he encourages that,"
På en presskonferens i Mexiko, där Obama befunnit sig de senaste dagarna, förklarade han:
“We are having a vigorous debate in the United States and I think that's a healthy thing... I suspect that once we get into the fall and people look at the actual legislation that's being proposed, that more sensible and reasoned arguments will emerge, and we're going to get this passed."
