Den skokastande irakiska journalisten Muntadhar al-Zeidi som gjorde sig känd när han i december förra året kastade sina skor mot en duckande president Bush och ropade “This is your farewell kiss, you dog! This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq”, dömdes i mars till 3 års fängelse - hans straff reducerades dock som konsekvens av gott uppförande och nästa månad släpps han fri.
“We have been informed officially about the court decision,” sa hans advokat al-Shujairi till The Associated Press i en telefonintervju. “His release will be a victory for the free and honorable Iraqi media.”
Skokastarincidenten gjorde den 30-årige Muntadhar al-Zeidi till en nationell hjälte och en symbol för den irakiska motståndsrörelsen. Anhängare till den shiitiske milispredikanten Muqtada al-Sadr sa om frigivandet:
“We believe that al-Zeidi did not commit any crime but only expressed the will of the Iraqi people in rejecting the U.S. occupation. Al-Zeidi’s image will always be a heroic one.”
Hans familj välkomnade naturligtvis också beslutet och hans bror Dargham sa:
“We thank God that he will be released, although we still fear for his safety since he is still in the prison. He will be released full of pride and strength from all the love he has received from the Iraqi people and international organizations and figures who advocate freedom.”
