Harry Reid och Las Vegas borgmästare arga på Obama

President Obama talade igår om ekonomin i New Hampshire, och sa då bland annat vad folk personligen inte borde göra när de själva har ont om pengar: köpa en ny båt eller spendera pengarna i Las Vegas. Uttalandet fick dock Las Vegas borgmästare Oscar Goodman att ilskna till, och förklara att Obama kom till Las Vegas så var han den förste att försöka få honom utsparkad därifrån, och avslutade med att säga att Obama var tröglärd - med en underförstådd referens till när Obama förra året när Obama sa att bankerna som fått bailouts inte borde ta turer till Las Vegas - något borgmästaren då krävde en ursäkt för. Nu sa han alltså något som beskrivs i följande nyhetsklipp:



Senatens majoritetsledare Harry Reid, också från Nevada (där ett tufft och svårt återval väntar i höst) protesterade också han mot presidentens uttryck och gjorde följande uttalande:

"Nevada is the nation's top destination for tourism and conventions. It is more popular than any other place in the country, and for good reason: It's affordable, easy to get to from anywhere, and the weather is perfect.

To truly reenergize our economy, we need people to travel to Las Vegas. I would much rather tourists and business travelers spend their money in Las Vegas than spend it overseas."

Han förklarade också att han talat med Vita Huset om saken:

“I just spoke to the White House and told them that while the president is correct that people saving for college need to be fiscally responsible, the president needs to lay off Las Vegas and stop making it the poster child for where people shouldn't be spending their money,”

Förra året gav Obama aldrig någon ursäkt till Las Vegas borgmästare, men den här gången skrev han ett ursäktande svar till Harry Reid, där han förklarade sitt uttalande:

“Dear Harry, I hope you know that during my Town Hall today, I wasn’t saying anything negative about Las Vegas. I was making the simple point that families use vacation dollars, not college tuition money, to have fun. There is no place better to have fun than Vegas, one of our country’s great destinations. I have always enjoyed my visits, look forward to visiting in a few weeks, and hope folks will visit in record numbers this year.”

Jag anser förstås att såväl Las Vegas borgmästare som Harry Reid gör en för stor sak av det hela (Harry Reid kanske för att han i rådande valtider inte gärna vill ses som någon som inte protesterar när presidenten talar negativt om hans hemstad) - men Obama valde inte sina ord väl. I synnerhet inte när han fått kritik för samma sak en gång tidigare.
