"It’s one of the oldest tricks in the presidential playbook: when you want to focus attention on an issue, hold a meeting and call it a “summit.”
President Barack Obama’s already done a “Fiscal Responsibility Summit,” a “Health Care Summit,” an “H1N1 Flu Preparedness Summit,” and even a “Distracted Driving Summit.”
Next up: a “Jobs Summit” Thursday, and if Obama thought fighting the flu or getting health reform done was tough, wait until he faces the hard truth that presidents ultimately face when they need an economic quick-fix.
There isn’t one."
"The biggest political danger for Obama going into the jobs summit, though, is creating a sense that he’s out of ideas.
Ten months into his term, that’s not an impression he wants to give the nation, especially on the most important issue of his presidency."

"State and federal officials claimed that the stimulus money had saved 473 education jobs in North Chicago. But the school district there employs only 290 people. Officials claimed 166 jobs were saved in Wilmette schools. The real number: 0. The 382 jobs supposedly saved in Dolton-Riverdale? That's 142 more people than the school district employs. And on and on.
Across the country, journalists and government watchdogs are finding the same yawning gap between stimulus claim and stimulus reality."
"Administration officials say they're scrambling to fix the problems. But their credibility on the impact of stimulus spending at this point has been badly wounded.
Actually, you can precisely measure it: 0."
"I think we all respect John as a historical figure. The question is, who can represent Arizona with a clear, consistent philosophy in the United States Senate. Apparently, the electorate, at least my fellow Republicans, are telling us in this poll they're inclined to look at someone other than John."
"Senator McCain never takes any election for granted and is working hard to continue to deserve the support of Arizonans as he fights to create jobs in the state and keep America safe."

"Just as Katrina exposed critical weaknesses in the priorities and competence of the Bush administration, the unfolding unemployment disaster is threatening to do the same for the Obama White House."

“The problem is that [the Obama administration] has been so focused by necessity on Afghanistan and Pakistan and on building the relationship with China that there is the perception that it is not spending as much time thinking about the India relationship,”
"It doesn’t take a genius to recognize the political, strategic, and moral worth to America, the world’s most powerful democracy, of a strong alliance with India, the world’s largest. Mr. Obama, by no stretch a man of tepid intelligence, has calibrated things artfully: Not only is Mr. Singh the first state visitor to Washington since the president took office in January, his trip is the first time that India has headed an American president’s list for a state visit—ever."
"George W. Bush was the best American president India ever had, and Mr. Obama’s ability to take India for granted is, in some measure, a tribute to the extent to which Mr. Bush locked the two countries into a presumptively inseparable alliance. But for all his emphasis on diplomacy in dealing with hostile states, like Iran, or inveterate competitor-states, like China, Mr. Obama has failed to grasp the diplomatic importance of tending to alliances, whether they be old and true ones, such as the one with Israel, or young and sensitive ones, such as the one with India."
"Unlike China, which is inherently competitive for global leadership—and which will never accept American leadership or direction — India is a country that would, like Britain or Japan or Germany, settle for a partnership with the United States that guaranteed mutual benefit and respect. India’s natural state, if nations can be said to have such a thing, is neither triumphalist nor antagonist; it is cooperative and redemptive, much as America’s tends to be. One trusts that Mr. Obama will come to see these qualities as clearly as his predecessor did. If not, this could be one area in which history will judge Mr. Obama to have been “dumb,” and Mr. Bush to have been the “smart” one."
''I think the respect for fundamental human rights, the respect for the rule of law, respect for multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-religious rights, I think those have values. So, even the Indian perforce with regard to the GDP might not be as good as the Chinese, certainly I would not like to choose the Chinese path,"

"It was an honor having Governor Palin and her family in our home this evening. I, like many people, have been impressed with her strong commitment to her faith, to family and love of country. I appreciated hearing her speak of her own spiritual journey and her life in Alaska. I shared with her my own memories of preaching in the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage in 1984. We had an opportunity to pray together. Life in the spotlight is not easy and I pray that whatever lies ahead for this family that their faith in God and His Son, Jesus Christ, would remain strong and that God would put a hedge of protection around her and all those she holds dear. Sarah and her family will always be welcome in the Graham home."

"we emerge from the worst recession in generations, there is nothing more important than to do everything we can to get our economy moving again and put Americans back to work, and I will go anywhere to pursue that goal.
That’s one of the main reasons I took this trip. Asia is a region where we now buy more goods and do more trade with than any other place in the world – commerce that supports millions of jobs back home."
"The evidence pointing to a growing human contribution to global warming is so widely accepted that the hacked material is unlikely to erode the overall argument. However, the documents will undoubtedly raise questions about the quality of research on some specific questions and the actions of some scientists."

"The Obama administration and Congress are coming under increasing fire over blunders, duplicate counts and exaggerations in the reporting of jobs created or saved by its $787-billion economic stimulus program. Newspapers in several states have discovered overstated job totals, modest real employment gains from the program and cases in which the spending protected or created no jobs at all.
While it still is early in the process, this trend suggests there's political spin at work designed to improve on results that likely will fall well short of President Barack Obama's declared intent to create 3.5 million jobs by the end of 2010. This only adds to skepticism about the benefits of the massive stimulus spending program. And it confirms the ineffectiveness of the government as a job creator."
"Here in Michigan, General Motors initially said a government purchase of 5,000 vehicles created or saved 105 jobs, but later revealed no jobs were saved or created."
"Jobs are what matter most to taxpayers buffeted by unemployment rates exceeding 15 percent here and 10 percent nationally. If the stimulus spending is not having an impact on job creation -- and it appears not to be -- that fact should not be hidden by bad numbers that only serve to perpetuate bad policy."
