"The short summary is: We as human beings are predisposed to short-term thinking. And yet we also have the capacity to form long-term goals based on values, if they're shared with one another and if there's a sufficient dedication to staying on course toward those goals. This is by far the largest challenge we've ever faced and the clearest example of how we have to call on that capacity that is innate, to make a choice to set a long-term goal. We've got to do it. It's just a question of how long it will take to get our act together."

"The second problem — mainly relevant to the global scaling of the nuclear option — is the linkage to proliferation.

If you're a dictator in a country that has a nuclear reactor and fuel cycle, you can force your scientists and engineers to work secretly at night to make nuclear weapons. That's what's happening in Iran. That's what's happened in North Korea. In the eight years I was in the White House, every single nuclear weapons proliferation challenge we faced was connected to a reactor program. So the idea that it's going to be a silver bullet and we're going to put tens of thousands of these things all over the planet is just not going to happen. It would make the world a far more dangerous planet."

"I would say to the skeptics is, even if you don't believe in the science of global warming, even though the international scientific community says it's unequivocal, even though Academy of Sciences in any developed country have endorsed it, even if you take the opposite view, please help us reduce our dependence on foreign oil. It's a national security issue. Please help us create these millions of new jobs and fight this unemployment rate. There are multiple reasons why we ought to be doing this. You don't have to pick just one, because it all comes together."

"Secondly, as the book points out, there is in the media — in some quarters of media — talk radio, some of the cable networks, one in particular, some of the newspapers, Wall Street Journal, you can name the others, there is a really large effort that works hand in glove with the point of view of the carbon polluters."

"And then I guess the fourth element is there's an ideological group of opponents who believe that any serious effort to solve the climate crisis is going to involve a role for government in limiting carbon emissions, and they don't want to have any role for governments. In the words of one of them, they want to smother government in the bathtub. That's part of a large ideological battle that's been going on in this country for a couple of decades now."
