Besvikelsen över att Chicago inte fick sommar-OS 2016 - trots president Obamas och stora delar av det Chicago-befolkade Vita Husets tappra försök att påverka OS-kommissiondelegaternas röster - är stor. De flesta anser inte att det går att skylla på president Obama för förlusten - han försökte ju i alla fall. Däremot går det att skylla en annan president: Bush.
Den svarte predikanten Jesse Jackson, som hoppats på att från scenen på Daley Center Plazas få fira Chicagos seger, sa istället:
"There must be" resentment against America. The way we [refused to sign] the Kyoto Treaty, we misled the world into Iraq. The world had a very bad taste in its mouth about us. But there was such a turnaround after last November. The world now feels better about America and about Americans. That's why I thought the president's going was the deal-maker."
Och den Demokratiske kongresskvinnan Susana Mendoza - också från Chicago, sa:
"I travel a lot. ... I thought we had really turned a corner with the election of President Obama. People are so much more welcoming of Americans now. But this isn't the people of those countries. This is the leaders still living with outdated impressions of Americans."
Förklaringen var således enkel: om OS-kommittén bara förstått att Barack Obama inte är George W. Bush - och att dagens USA är ett helt annat land än för bara ett år sedan, så hade de valt Chicago.
Senatorn Roland Burris - som utnämndes av tidigare Illinois-guvernör Rod Blagojevich, skyllde också förlusten på den tidigare presidenten. En konservativ bloggare rapporterar:
"Senator Rowland Burris of Illinois, the Senator who was appointed to fill President Barack Obama’s vacant Senate seat, blames George Bush for Chicago not getting the Olympics in 2016. Burris stated in an interview, shortly after the announcement, that the image of the U. S. has been so tarnished in the last 8 years that, even Barack Obama making an unprecedented pitch for the games could not overcome the hatred the world has for us as a result of George Bush."
Obamas pressekreterare Robert Gibbs sa dock att USA:s anseende i världen nu stod högt, så därför borde man inte tolka in för mycket i "OS-förlusten":
"No, I think you saw both at the U.N. General Assembly, you saw at the G20 last week ... I think virtually every measure of our standing in the world is different than it was just this time last year. So I don't read too much of that into this."
