"Now, this was a serious reminder of the dangers that we face and the nature of those who threaten our homeland. Had the suspect succeeded in bringing down that plane, it could have killed nearly 300 passengers and crew, innocent civilians preparing to celebrate the holidays with their families and friends.
The American people should be assured that we are doing everything in our power to keep you and your family safe and secure during this busy holiday season."
"Next week, our nation will pause to honor and remember the lives lost on September the 11th. We must also remember a central lesson of the tragedy: our homeland is vulnerable to attack, and we must do everything in our power to protect it."
I augusti 2006 talade Bush inför National Counterterrorism Center i Virginia och sa då:
"...the United States of America is engaged in a war against a extremist group of folks bound together by an ideology, willing to use terror to achieve their objectives.
Our most solemn duty in the federal government is to protect the American people, and I will assure the American people that we're doing everything in our power to protect you."
President Obama fortsatte gårdagens tal:
"...those who would slaughter innocent men, women and children must know that the United States will more -- do more than simply strengthen our defenses. We will continue to use every element of our national power to disrupt, to dismantle and defeat the violent extremists who threaten us, whether they are from Afghanistan or Pakistan, Yemen or Somalia, or anywhere where they are plotting attacks against the U.S. homeland."
"The bill before me takes account of the new realities and dangers posed by modern terrorists. It will help law enforcement to identify, to dismantle, to disrupt, and to punish terrorists before they strike."
"I think what is important to remember is that al Qaeda continues to want to harm America, and it is all the more reason we are waging a global war on terrorism. We are making progress. We are disrupting and dismantling the global terrorist networks. And it's important to go after and confront these terrorists, where they are, before they can attack us."
