Bush berättar att hans syfte med boken inte är att skapa ett gott eftermäle utan bara ge läsarna ett perspektiv - hans perspektiv på de beslut han fattade i Vita Huset:
"I'm not trying to fashion legacy," sa Bush. "Legacy is eventually formed with time," sa han och tillade "and I'm not gonna be around to see it."
Boken är, säger han, "a way of saying to the people that witnessed my presidency, ‘here is my perspective, here is what it was like."
Bush berättar också om fyra stora beslut i sitt presidentskap: skattesänkningarna, Afghanistan, Irak och the Trouble Asset Relief Program (TARP) - och kommenterar:
"I wouldn't have changed those four decisions."
Gällande TARP - som kritiserades av många inte minst inom hans eget parti, förklarar han:
"It was convenient for some people out there to make a case that [TARP] was not necessary," Mr. Bush said, "but they weren't charged with the responsibility of dealing with a depression."
Han fortsätter med att säga att han var ovillig att spela med ekonomin bara av ideologiska skäl, och förklarar för RCP att han gällande finanskrisen ville vara en Roosevelt, inte en Hoover. (Enligt min uppfattning lite elakt mot Hoover och lite överskattat gentemot Roosevelt).
Gällande Irak så beskriver Bush situationen 2006 och att det då blev allt svårare att förmå det amerikanska folket att tro att det gick att vinna - det fanns dock en grupp som verkligen trodde att kriget kunde vinnas, och det var militären - och med dessa knöt han ett ömsesidigt lojalitetsband:
The irony is that a subset of the American people - the military - believed we could win. You know, I hung with them and they hung with me throughout eight years. If you asked me what I miss, I miss being Commander in Chief. I love our military.
Bush kommenterar också sina utrikespolitiska relationer och nämner en sak om Putin som han inte har med i boken. När han träffade Putin första gången så nämnde han för denne att USA ensidigt skulle dra ner sina kärnvapenstridsspetsar från 6 000 till 2 000 - och att Ryssland var fria att göra som de ville.
"You can join us or not. You're not our enemy", sa Bush till Putin.
Till RealClearPolitics säger dock Bush att han inte i boken har med ett par andra ord han också sa därefter:
"We're going to reduce [our nuclear arsenal] down, but the ones we have will work."
