Obamas personlighet mer populär än hans politik

Så här 100 dagar in i Obamas presidentperiod visar opinionsundersökningar att Obamas personlighet är mer populär än hans politik. Enligt CNN anser 3 av 4 amerikaner att Obama har de personliga egenskaper som kan krävas av en president. Endast 57% håller dock med om Obamas åsikter i de politiska sakfrågorna.

"Americans have two different assessments of President Obama. One, personal. The other, policy," säger CNN:s politiska analytiker Bill Schneider.

I följande artikel på Real Clear Politics skriver Michael Barone om hur amerikaner överlag inte är lika intresserade som Obama att närma sig en "europeisk modell":

"Ninety-nine days in, with 1,362 days to go, and we can see with some clarity the trajectory on which Barack Obama wants to take the United States. To put it in geographical terms, he wants to move us some considerable distance toward Europe...

...Obama and his party were brought to power by George W. Bush's perceived incompetence on Katrina and Iraq, not because of some pent-up and suddenly overwhelming demand for the Europeanization of America.

Polls show voters ambivalent about Obama's expansion of government, skeptical of global warming theories, and appreciative despite the financial crisis and recession of the efficacy of market capitalism to produce economic growth. They are also confident, as Franklin Roosevelt and John Kennedy were, that America is a special and unique country. Obama audaciously believes he can lead the country in a direction it's not sure it wants to go."

"What does the public find most controversial about President Obama? His policies, much more than his personal qualities." säger Schneider vidare. Och Keating Holland - också från CNN - säger: "Now that Obama is president, the number who agree with his views on the issues has gone down, while the number who say he has the right personal qualities has gone up,"

I fallet Bush år 2001 så var situationen den omvända. Det går varken i president Obamas eller president Bush fall att ännu säga vilken plats dessa kommer att få i historien. Vad historien dock indikerar är att presidenter populära i sin samtid, många gånger inte blev populära i efterhand. Och än mer - presidenter inte speciellt populära i sin samtid blev väldigt populära i efterhand.
