Också i USA har protester höjts mot fredsavtalet mellan Hamas och Fatah, och 27 av Senatens demokrater har i ett brev till president Obama där de manar denne att inte samarbeta med en regering som inkluderar Hamas:
"It is imperative for you to make clear to President Abbas that Palestinian Authority participation in a unity government with an unreformed Hamas will jeopardize its relationship wth the United States, including its receipt of U.S. aid," the letter says. "We urge you to conduct a review of the current situation and suspend aid should Hamas refuse to comply with Quartet conditions."
The senators conclude: "The Palestinian Authority needs to get back to the negotiating table rather than pursue futile and harmful efforts to join with Hamas or seek recognition of Palestinian statehood at the U.N."
Benjamin Netanyahu kommer också att besöka USA denna månad, och har blivit inbjuden av Representanthusets talesman John Boehner att tala inför en samlad kongress, vilket Netanyahu också gjorde 1996. Boehner lät meddela i mitten av april:
“It will be a great honor for Congress to welcome Prime Minister Netanyahu next month as part of his official visit to the United States,” Speaker Boehner said. “America and Israel are the closest of friends and allies, and we look forward to hearing the Prime Minister’s views on how we can continue working together for peace, freedom, and stability.”
Benjamin Netanyahu är en otroligt bra talare, och framträdandet kommer att bli mycket intressant, inte minst efter de senaste händelserna kring Bin Ladin och Hamas, samt naturligtvis i ljuset av hela demokratiseringsvågen i mellanöstern.
