Dick Cheney intervjuas i radio av Scott Hennen, och förklarar för denne hur han, till skillnad från Colin Powell, inte anser att Republikanerna bör bli mer moderata, utan hålla sig till sina grundläggande utgångspunkter kretsande kring regeringens roll i samhället och dedikation till konstitutionen. Cheney säger att han varit med länge i leken och att talet som från vissa håll hörs om att Republikanerna måste bli som Demokraterna för att överleva är inget nytt:
"Most Republicans have a pretty good idea of values, and aren’t eager to have someone come along and say, “Well, the only way you can win is if you start to act more like a Democrat.” I really think we go through these cycles periodically Scott, and I’ve been through them before. I remember campaigning across the country with Gerald Ford in 1974 when I was his Chief of Staff. This was the Watergate Election, the first one since Nixon had to resign. It was a train wreck; I mean, we got blown away in every part of the country. In 1976 we lost the presidency. By 1980 Ronald Reagan was president, we’d had a major resurgence in the party and we’d captured control of the Senate, and obviously embarked upon the Reagan Era in American politics. So I think periodically we have to go through one these sessions. It helps clear away some of the underbrush…some of the older folks who’ve been around a long time (like yours truly) need to move on, and make room for that young talent that’s coming along. But I think it’s basically healthy. I don’t spend a lot of time or lose a lot of sleep over it. I just think now is the time for people who are committed to get out there and find candidates they like and go to work for them."
Cheney går vidare till att spekulera i vad han tror ligger till grund för Obama-administrationens senaste turer kring GITMO-frågan, och gissar att Obama och hans administrations inställning i många avseenden förmodligen är ett sätt för dem att tillgodose väljarbasen på Demokraternas vänsterflank. Han går sedan vidare och försvarar förhörsmetoderna - och kritiserar Obamas invändning, när Obama sagt att andra metoder istället hade kunnat brukas för att få information. Hennen säger:
"...the President... believes we could have gotten this information in other ways, in ways that were consistent with our values and ways that were consistent with who we are.” What is your response to that?"
Varpå Cheney säger:
"Well, I don’t believe that’s true. That assumes that we didn’t try other ways, and in fact we did. We resorted, for example, to waterboarding, which is the source of much of the controversy…with only three individuals. In those cases, it was only after we’d gone through all the other steps of the process. The way the whole program was set up was very careful, to use other methods and only to resort to the enhanced techniques in those special circumstances."
Oavsett vad man tycker om metoderna på GITMO, så gör Cheney en viktig och av media ofta förbisedd poäng. De tuffa förhörsmetoderna användes på ett fåtal fångar, och detta gjordes först efter att andra metoder visat sig inte fungera. När Obama därför säger att informationen hade kunnat utvinnas på annat sätt, så ligger det på hans bord att bevisa att det finns andra metoder som fungerar lika bra eller bättre som Bushadministrationen inte först redan hade provat innan de satte in de "tuffare" metoderna.
Dick Cheney är en mycket smart person - och en mycket misskrediterad sådan. Desto mer jag hör hans resonemang, desto vettigare tycker jag dock att han är. Han är betydligt mycket vettigare och mer konsekvent är Obamas vice-president Joe Biden någonsin varit, vars taltabbar är både oändligt mycket fler och mycket värre än några av Bushs tabbar. Cheney är förmodligen en av USA:s mest kompetenta vice-presidenter på flera decennier.
