Såväl Obamas pressekreterare Robert Gibbs, som Republikanernas ledare för utrikesaffärskommittén i Representanthuset, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen - kritiserar FN:s generalsekreterare Ban Ki-Moon för att ha kallat USA för en "deadbeat nation" för att de inte betalar sin FN-avgift i tid. Det var inför stängda dörrar i ett möte med Kongressmedlemmar som Ban Ki-Moon påpekade att USA är 1 miljard dollar efter i sin betalning till FN.
"I think given the contribution that the American taxpayer makes, I do think it's -- would be appropriate to acknowledge that role, and the President looks forward to working with the U.N. on mutual challenges," sa Obamas pressekreterare Robert Gibbs.
Republikanernas Ileana Ros-Lehtinen gav ännu tydligare besked:
"Last year, American taxpayers ponied up nearly $5 billion for the UN system. The U.S. is by far the world’s largest donor to the UN. The U.S. provides other assistance for peacekeeping operations. The U.S. responds to emergency appeals. We are always on deck. Yet, the head of the UN comes to Congress and scolds us for not doing enough?,"
