New York håller ett specialval i delstatens 20:e kongressdistrikt. Kongressplatsen innehölls tidigare av Demokraten Kirsten Gillibrand, som dock nominerades av New Yorks guvernör David Paterson att överta Hillary Clintons efterlämnade Senatsplats.
Kampen står nu mellan Republikanen James Tedisco och Demokraten Scott Murphy. Valdagen utfaller den 31 mars - och kampanjen går nu på högvarv. Demokraten Murphy leder med några få procent, men någon seger går inte att ta ut i förskott. New Yorks 20:e distrikt är ett av delstatens mer konservativa distrikt och har länge varit Republikanskt till dess Kirsten Gillibrand besegrade den sittande John E. Sweeney 2006. I presidentvalet 2004 vann president Bush distriktet med 8% trots att han förlorade stort i delstaten överlag. 2008 vann dock Obama distriktet över McCain med 50.7%-47.7%.
Nu har Vita Huset slutit upp på Scott Murphys sida. President Obama skrev ett e-mail till 50 000 av sina anhängare runtom New York-distriktet där han skrev:
I’m writing to you now because you have the opportunity to make a big impact on my efforts to bring about a lasting economic recovery.
Today I’m announcing my support for Scott Murphy, candidate for New York’s 20th Congressional District.
On Tuesday, March 31st — just one week away — voters will have the chance to send Scott to Congress, where we’ll work together to get our economy moving in the right direction.
Volunteer this week and help in the final push to send Scott Murphy to Congress.
Scott has the kind of experience and background we desperately need right now in Washington.
He’s created jobs by building and growing small businesses while bringing people together to address difficult challenges. He supports the economic recovery plan we’ve put in place, and I know we can count on him as an ally for change.

Scott Murphy förklarade att han var ärad av presidentens stöd:

På den Republikanska sidan har partiet slutit upp lika tätt bakom sin kandidat. Och Michael Steele, John Boehner, George Pataki och Newt Gingrich har gjort James Tedisco till en topprioritet i försök att vinna ännu en extra plats för Republikanerna i Kongressen.
