Charles Freeman, som av Obama-administrationen nomninerades till att leda the National Intelligence Council - en strategisk tankesmedja inom underrättelsetjänsten som förmedlar underrättelsebedömningar till Kongressen och även Vita Huset, hoppar av efter att han kritiserats i Kongressen bl a för sin kritik mot Israel och sina affärsband till Saudiarabien.
2007 sa Freeman följande om Israel:
"The brutal oppression of the Palestinians by Israeli occupation shows no sign of ending," och "American identification with Israel has become total."
Uttalanden som Kongressen inte såg mellan fingrarna på. Den Demokratiske senatorn Charles Schumer från New York sa:
"Charles Freeman was the wrong guy for this position. His statements against Israel were way over the top and severely out of step with the administration,"
Pete Hoekstra - Republikansk kongressman och Republikanernas toppman i Representanthusets underrättelsekommitté sa:
"This is yet another breakdown in the Obama administration vetting process -- one more in a long series of missteps."
Freeman fick också kritik av Joeseph Lieberman, som menade att om Freeman godkändes så skulle kritiken likväl inte försvinna. En slutsats Freeman själv också drog, och i ett meddelande till sina vänner och supporters efter att han beslutat att hoppa av nomineringsprocessen skriver han:
"I do not believe the National Intelligence Council could function effectively while its chair was under constant attack by unscrupulous people with a passionate attachment to the views of a political faction in a foreign country,"
Charles Freemans avhopp är dock ännu ett i raden av problem Obama-administrationen haft med att fylla sina nyckelposter.
